The anchor defines the question

VWAP accumulates price weighted by volume. An anchored VWAP begins that accumulation at a chosen event or time: a session open, calendar boundary, confirmed swing, prior-session extreme, or manual timestamp. Moving the anchor changes every later value.

The anchor should have a stated reason that can be selected without knowing the later path. Anchoring retrospectively to the most visually convenient extreme can create a persuasive picture without a repeatable process.

Know the data convention

Volume is not identical across instruments. Exchange-traded products may report transaction volume, while some indices, foreign-exchange feeds, and CFDs use other activity measures or may not provide comparable volume. Session and extended-hours choices also change the accumulated line.

A VWAP is an average of recorded activity, not a universal estimate of fair value. Price above or below it is a location statement; it is not a directional instruction.

Deviation bands need their own definition

Bands may use standard deviation, percentages, ATR, or another distance measure. The calculation window can be anchored with the VWAP or drawn from a separate lookback. Those methods are not interchangeable.

Multiple anchors can show clustering or disagreement. Overlap is useful context, but three related averages are not three independent confirmations. Keep the anchor, basis, and current data coverage visible.
